The Library Literacy Coordinator is responsible for planning, implementing and coordinating the Library’s Literacy Program. This is a full time position with evening hours essential. The continuation of established classes in the areas of Adult Basic Education and ESL for beginner, intermediate and advanced classes as well as Digital Literacy instruction and workforce development is required. The coordinator must be proficient in teaching both English/ESL and math.
Responsibilities include collaborating with the Rhode Island Family Literacy Initiative based at the Providence Public Library, while communicating and coordinating services with local literacy providers and community agencies. The ability to think creatively, be innovative, and draw on knowledge of adult education techniques is necessary. Experience teaching adult non-traditional learners and the ability to be responsive to the needs of this particular community are required. The coordinator is a team member of the Library staff, working with other staff members and administration to meet the mission and goals of the Library. Effective working relations with all Library patrons must be established. Experience working in library literacy programs and a demonstrated interest in learning about library procedures are highly desired.
Minimum Qualifications: Master’s Degree in adult education or related field. Knowledge and experience with digital services and digital literacy, math skills and GED preparation, ESL and workforce skills. Candidate must have previous experience working with adults from diverse economic or cultural backgrounds. Must be familiar with RIDE requirements, including CALIS database and CASAS tests. Bilingual in Spanish or Portuguese highly desired.
